Independence of Canada
Trudeau, Pierre Elliott. Remarks by the Prime Minister at the Proclamation Ceremony on April 17, 1982. Date uploaded: 2002/01/29 http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/2/4/h4-4024-e.html
Although this source is not an example of a specific individual's independence, it describes the importance of the independence of a nation. The transition of acquiring full national sovereignty for Canada was gradually and peacefully accomplished in 1982 with the homecoming of The Constitution of Canada. In Trudeau's speech he discusses how important the independence of Canada really was. It allowed the Canadian government the ability to make their own decisions in law making, and in the involvement of foreign affairs without having to answer to the United Kingdom. In support of this argument, Trudeau mentioned in his speech that Canada was finally prepared to take on full self governing and independence from the UK. However, this transition was in progress ever since Prime Minister Robert Borden got Canada an independent seat at the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. Progressively Canada grew more and more independent over the years. If it wasn't for the hard work and determination of many Canadians, with the patience of the UK, Canada would have never grown into the independent nation that we know today.
